Today's Meet During Read Aloud

As we read our class read aloud, The Double Life of Pocahontas, students are logging their thoughts in a Today's Meet conversation.  This allows everyone to have their thinking heard and is a formative assessment for me to gauge their understanding.  I also shared this link with parents.  This allows them to see their child's input to our classroom conversations.

  1. I love that your students are collaborating through Today's Meet! Could you share some of the tips you have using this tool with 5th grade students? Also, could you share a short reflection on the students' responses to this tool? Your insight is so valuable!

  2. In the beginning we had a few issues with messing around and had one "ghost writer" when they were with a substitute. That was disappointing and spurred a conversation about digital citizenship. Some kids even said in the Today's Meet, "Stop! Be a digital citizen!" The class consensus was people were doing this for attention, so as long as they didn't respond people would stop. For the most part that worked.

Using the Today's Meet helped engage the kids in conversation, held them accountable during the read aloud, and provided formative assessment for me to see their understanding of what we read and how they responded to books.

I didn't set an requirement or expectation of what they posted, but did encourage everyone to post. From time to time, I also asked a blanket question and allowed time for everyone to respond. Overall, this served as a good tool for read aloud, and I will use it in the future. It would be cool to share a read aloud/Today's Meet with another class. Maybe each class has one person a day type thoughts/questions and have a dialogue that way.
